A municipal museum specialised in the heritage of Ciutadella
The Museum of de Sa Font Bastion houses an important permanent collection that shows the lifestyles, customs and rich cultural heritage of the city of Ciutadella until the Moorish period. It is located inside one of the bastions of the town walls.
The Museu Municipal de Ciutadella, located in the historical building of Can Saura, currently has got a semi-permanent exhibition about the rituals and funerary practices performed on the island during history.
The exhibition entitled “May the earth rest lightly on you. A story of death in Menorca” makes a historical tour from the prehistory to the Islamic period showing rituals and objects of a high archaeological value, such as those coming from Cova des Càrritx or from the protonaveta from Son Olivaret.
The exhibition emphasizes the role of urban archaeology as a source for the discovery of new sites. In fact, in the building, the restoration jobs found a part of an Islamic necropolis which can be seen while you are touring.
The museum plans to expand its space in the building with a bigger display of not only archaeological objects, but also historical ones to spread the information to a diverse audience and highlight the importance of the ways of living, habits and the cultural heritage of the city and the island.
It is a museum of a strong, local presence and of municipal ownership and management.
Open from monday to satuday. From 10:30 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 21:00h.
