Alaior (Menorca)

Alaior is a charming little white inland village in the central area of Menorca. It was built around a hill crowned by the church of Santa Eulàlia, which served as a refuge for the population in the event of attack.

Strolling around the medieval village of Alaior is like travelling back in time. The narrow streets are winding and steep and the municipality has many charming corners. Some buildings of interest are the Pati de sa Lluna, a former Franciscan cloister, and the Palau de Can Salort, an old manor house that today houses the university extension of the UIB.

Although the town is inland, it also has a coastal area: here you will find the sandy Son Bou beach, the longest on the island, and the ancient necropolis of Cales Coves, a group of coves and caves that are protected by cliffs and from a quiet area for bathing. On the way, it is essential to visit the Talayotic settlement of Torralba d'en Salort, one of the most spectacular and best preserved on the island.

Traditionally, Alaior has been the epicentre of Menorcan cheese production and has artisan cheese factories of recognised prestige. However, it is also famous for its ice cream, liqueurs and handmade pastries.
