The high density of prehistoric sites, their unusual level of conservation and the unique constructions of Menorca - the funerary navetas, circular houses and taulas, together with the talayots and other structures - are considered by UNESCO to be an exceptional example of cyclopean architecture and its evolution over 1,500 years, which represents an important source of knowledge about the life of the Talayotic people.

The sites cover a broad chronological period, from human settlement around 2500-2100 BC to the Roman conquest in the first century BC. Over two thousand years of history during which different periods took place.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF MENORCA

Talayotic constructions were built with a cyclopean technique, which uses large stones placed dry, without mortar.

The majority of the monuments preserve most of their structure, and research carried out has enabled the identification of up to fifteen types of constructions with different functions, including megalithic tombs, hypogea, natural caves with walls, wells, talayots and rooms with slab roofs, as well as the well-known navetas and talayots that are exclusive to Menorca.

For the nomination, a series that synthesizes the island’s prehistory has been selected from among the more than 1,500 sites. These are constructions that stand out for their monumentality, good condition, the scientific research carried out on them and their contribution to furthering knowledge about the society of the period, characterized by their cohesion, management strategies and control of resources.
