Marine Reserve Illa de l'Aire

The Illa de l'Aire marine reserve is a paradise for lovers of diving and underwater exploration. Located off the south-east coast of Minorca, the island of Illa de l'Aire and its beautiful lighthouse are emblematic. Its waters are home to underwater archaeological treasures, shipwrecks and ancient anchors.

Illa de l'Aire Marine Reserve extends from Punta de Rafalet to Punta de Xoriguer, and includes the island of Illa de l'Aire. This is an emblematic marine reserve, with a beautiful lighthouse that stands impressively in front of the most beautiful coves in the municipality of Sant Lluís.

The seabed is dotted with impressive posidonia meadows and numerous communities of algae. Currents also often converge here, making it an area with enormous potential for the development of several species of commercial fish.

It is a favourite spot for scuba divers – an estimated 2000 dives are made in the area around Illa de l'Aire each year. Its calcareous qualities have created numerous caves, and it was also declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2010 as it features ten underwater archaeological sites, several shipwrecks and anchors.

As a result, it has a special diving zone from S'Algar to Biniancolla where fishing is not allowed (except for angling from the surface). Professional small-scale fishing, recreational surface fishing, recreational shellfish harvesting and underwater activities are permitted in other areas.
