Marine Reserve Nord de Menorca

Covering more than 5000 hectares, the perimeter of this marine reserve protects over 600 species that inhabit the waters between Es Cap Gros cape, the island of Illa des Porros and Punta des Morter, in an area full of rocks more than 400 million years old.

The North Minorcan Marine Reserve, as its name suggests, is located on the island's northern Tramuntana coast. Its perimeter protects the biodiversity between Cape Gros, Illa des Porros island and Punta des Morter.

It is a protected area of spectacular beauty in terms of both the coastal landscape and the seabed, which is over 30 metres deep in areas very close to the coast.

Since it was first protected in 1999, it has become a true incubator for biodiversity. There has been a notable increase in the number and size of the species that inhabit it, such as red lobsters, groupers, sea bream, conger eels and many other fish typically found in Mediterranean waters.

Particularly special are the posidonia reef in Sanitja Port, several groups of algae and the extensive rocky areas, where highly interesting species can be found, such as red coral, date mussels and crustaceans such as lobsters and langoustines

This reserve features different levels of protection: a fully protected nature reserve where any type of fishing or extraction of flora and fauna is prohibited (from Pla de Mar to Cala Barril cove); a second specially protected area covering part of the bay of Fornells, where only artisanal fishermen can fish; and a third area where fishing is allowed under certain conditions.
